What is Depression?
Depression is a common and serious mood disorder. People who suffer from depression, usually experience persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness and lose interest in activities, which previously enjoyed. Despite, this disorder causing emotional problems, it can also present with physical symptoms such as chronic pain or digestive issues. To be diagnosed with depression, symptoms must be present for at least two weeks;
- Depressed mood, almost every day.
- Loss of interest or pleasure in all activities.
- Loss of weight or weight gain.
- Reduction of physical movement or activity.
- Loss of energy or fatigue.
- Feelings of worthlessness.
- Decreased concentration.
- Recurrent thoughts of death, and recurrent suicidal ideation with or without a specific plan for committing suicide.
Treatment
According to studies, a combination of medication (SSRI) and psychotherapy (CBT, IPT, PPT) has been seen to be effective in the treatment of depression.
